In the elastomer industry, TPE usually refers to composite functional materials modified with SEBS.

Olefin-based transparent TPE has good weather resistance and ozone resistance, so it is known as the fastest-growing variety of TPE. It is mainly used as a major rubber material in fields such as automotive and home appliances.

TPE is a classic aggregation-induced emission molecule, meaning it has no fluorescence in solution but strong fluorescence in solid state. Therefore, transparent TPE materials also have important applications in fields such as organic optoelectronics.

TPE elastomer soft gel has excellent comprehensive properties and is the most commonly used soft gel material for secondary injection molding, overmolding, and two-shot injection molding.


PP overmolding is a plastic with very weak polarity, and its polarity is very close to that of TPE based on SEBS.

Because transparent TPE materials require high light transmittance, strict surface quality requirements must be imposed on the products. No defects such as streaks, pores, whitening, halo, black spots, discoloration, or poor gloss are allowed. Therefore, throughout the entire injection molding process, careful attention and strict, even special requirements must be placed on the TPE raw materials, equipment, molds, and even product design.

Transparent TPE is used in home appliance casings, handles, grips, etc. It exhibits very good hand feel, is non-slip and labor-saving, and is easy to color and process. It also offers a wide design space.

Therefore, for overmolding PP, the most conventional TPE formula can be directly used without adding additional polar modifiers.


Preheating the insert before overmolding helps improve bonding strength.

The wall thickness of TPE parts should be as uniform as possible to achieve the best molding cycle. The transition between different wall thicknesses should be gradual to reduce flow-related problems such as gas marks and bubbles.

The thickness of the TPE/TPR overmolding layer. In most overmolding applications, a wall thickness range of 1.5-3.0mm ensures good adhesion. If the TPE layer is too thin, injection molding becomes difficult, adhesion strength is low, and hand feel is poor. If the TPE layer is too thick, on one hand, cost is higher, and on the other hand, defects such as shrinkage and bubbles can occur.

Because the preheating process can improve the compatibility between the insert material and TPE. The appropriate temperature for the insert needs to be discussed and determined with the material supplier.
