How to Choose Soft-Touch Materials for Automotive Interiors? TPE, TPU, TPV vs. Silicone

Compare TPE, TPU, TPV, and silicone in processing, touch feel, abrasion resistance, weather resistance, and key validation for automotive interior soft-touch and overmolded parts, helping engineers select materials based on specific components and test requirements.

Table of Contents

Soft-touch materials for automotive interiors must simultaneously meet requirements for touch feel, appearance, odor, heat aging resistance, cleaner resistance, and mass production processes. TPE, TPU, TPV, and silicone each have suitable applications; one cannot judge superiority solely by material name.

Typical Characteristics of the Four Material Types

MaterialSuitable ApplicationsKey Validation
TPEKnobs, grip areas, localized overmolding, and cushioning partsOdor, tackiness, adhesion, scratch resistance, and heat aging
TPUSoft parts requiring higher abrasion resistance and strengthHydrolysis, yellowing, processing drying, and low-temperature performance
TPVSeals, sheaths, and parts with weather resistance requirementsCompression set, sealing structure, media resistance, and surface appearance
SiliconeSpecial temperature resistance, elasticity, or standalone flexible partsTear strength, dust pickup, curing conditions, and assembly cost

Select Materials Based on Location and Operating Conditions First

Steering wheel accessories, door panel armrests, cup holder mats, knobs, storage bin pads, and sealing parts experience different stress and temperature conditions. Clarify whether the soft-touch part is exposed to sunlight, skin oils, cleaners, continuous compression, friction, or low temperatures, then set corresponding tests.

Comparison Method Before Mass Production

  1. Create samples using actual substrate, color, wall thickness, and texture;
  2. Check initial odor, gloss, color difference, touch feel, and assembly;
  3. Subject samples to heat, humidity, light, cleaner, and abrasion treatments per customer conditions;
  4. Re-test appearance, adhesion, deformation, odor, and functionality after treatment;
  5. Lock in material batch, process window, and inspection methods.
Project Note: Automotive material requirements are typically defined by OEMs or Tier 1 suppliers. Specific test items and limits should be based on customer drawings, specifications, and official reports.
