Toys are items specifically designed for play, and one can also learn small pieces of knowledge from playing with them. However, due to safety concerns with certain toys, many countries around the world have established toy safety standards. Toys must undergo inspection, and those meeting the standards are marked accordingly; otherwise, production, sales, and import are prohibited. Most countries adopt the International Toy Safety Standard set by the International Council of Toy Industries.
As environmental requirements in the toy industry become increasingly stringent, in addition to the usual ROHS and EN71 environmental standards, the EU REACH regulation has expanded the list of SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern) to 38 items in recent years. Traditional toys often use PVC soft rubber as raw material, which frequently fails to meet ROHS, REACH, and EN71 testing standards in terms of heavy metal content, phthalate toxic substance detection, and SVHC detection. TPR soft rubber, on the other hand, complies with environmental standards and is a new eco-friendly material that can replace PVC soft rubber. After years of research and development, Dongguan Juye Plastic Technology Co., Ltd. has successfully developed a food-grade TPE/TPR specifically for children's toys.
TPR soft rubber is a type of thermoplastic elastomer, a composite functional material modified from base materials such as SBS and SEBS. For toy production and processing, TPR soft rubber materials used for spraying, printing, and silk-screening typically have a hardness range of Shore 30~90A. The material can be natural, semi-transparent, or transparent, all offering excellent spraying and silk-screening characteristics.
Five Key Properties of TPR:
1. Excellent color matching performance.
Soft rubber toy products often come in bright and diverse colors, requiring high color matching performance from TPR materials. A qualified TPR grade should have good pigment dispersion properties, allowing pigments to color effectively, achieving vibrant and uniform color matching results!
2. Good spraying, painting, and silk-screening performance
Most toy products require spraying, painting, or silk-screening. To achieve excellent spraying and silk-screening results (where paint does not peel off), the compatibility between TPR materials and inks/paints is crucial. Suitable inks and paints should be selected based on the characteristics of the TPR material.
3. Crack resistance of soft toys
For very soft toys, appropriate TPR materials should be selected to prevent cracking after processing. Additionally, optimizing the molding process can reduce stress-induced shrinkage and cracking!
4. Environmental performance
Although most TPR materials meet ROHS and EN71-3 testing standards, different countries or regions have varying testing standards for toy products. Some require the absence of PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) or NP (nonylphenol), while others require compliance with REACH SVHC regulations. Therefore, when formulating TPR materials, these environmental requirements must be fully considered!
5. Other requirements
Some toy products require high tensile and tear resistance, while others demand good rebound elasticity. In summary, the most suitable TPR material should be provided based on the customer's specific requirements.
Regarding material hardness, TPR offers materials with a hardness range of 0-100A for selection.
Regarding TPR processing, injection molding and extrusion remain the primary methods, while special TPR materials can be processed using blow molding.
